The sun is going down
Upon a changing scene.
Memories flash by
Of laughter, running free.
The moon is unwilling to rise
Challenged by a chill in the air.
We’ve escaped summer’s grasp.
Watch out! Fall is sending out its snare.
Leaves change color:
Fall in piles upon the ground.
Children rustle through them
Flinging leaves up and all around.
Pumpkins from local fields:
Some large and some quite small
Are scooped out. Knives grabbed
To carve each orange ball.
Giggling voices are heard
As choices are made.
Footsteps will scurry
Down each street and lane.
As those trick-or-treaters
In costumes that vary
Seek candy by handfuls:
More than they can carry.
Faces smeared with chocolate:
Children tucked in their beds
Soon are kissed by the dawn.
Aw…More school days ahead!
