Here’s a gift
Wrapped in pretty paper
Tied up in a bow.
I selected it just for you.
You wonder what it could be.
Today is your birthday!
Or maybe it’s Christmas —
Or a special day in between
I think about the cost.
Of going from store to store.
Trying to figure out what’s best
For you: family or friend
Maybe I am crafty
So it’s something I created:
A painting or a knitted blanket
Did I make it your favorite color?
Perhaps you are a reader
Or a teacher of students in school.
Online or in an actual store
I spent time trying to choose.
Are you a collector
Of statues or paintings
Coffee mugs or T-shirts.
Do you have this one already?
I sense your anticipation
As you start unwrapping the box.
Will you like it?
Did I choose correctly?
What determines the value
Of what is wrapped in the box?
My time, my creativity
My memory or thoughts?
I have no answer
To those questions.
I leave you just with this:
A gift’s value is not in how it was received.
